This is a nut-free, protein-rich, melt in your mouth candy. Homemade halva is super quick to put together and more nutritious than commercially-made halva, which usually contains high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) or refined white sugar. For those unfamiliar, tahini is actually sesame butter, made up solely of ground sesame seeds, a great source of vegan protein (1 Tbsp tahini = 2.6 grams of protein) and an excellent source of calcium. The good fat and protein in this recipe help balance out the sweetness of the honey. The addition of pure cocoa powder provides some rich, chocolatey satisfaction without the health disadvantages of most commercially produced chocolates.

CHOCOLATE HONEY HALVA

Ingredients

1 cup tahini
1/2 cup honey (or maple syrup)
1 tsp vanilla extract
3 Tbsp cocoa powder

Instructions

1. Blend all ingredients in a food processor, or by spoon until well combined.

Shaping recommendation: Squares covered in hemp seeds.

Keep cool or in fridge for best texture.

Makes about 24 one inch squares or “Tootsie”-like rolls.
