Get Sprouting!
Sprouting-What is all the buzz about?
This weekend I attended the CHFA (Canadian Health Food Association) Tradeshow.
The Vancouver convention center was filled with every health foodie concoction known (and previously unknown!) to humankind. This is a great place to see what is coming down the pike of your local healthfood store and what all kinds of health experts will be writing about- promoting or critiquing.
Last year it seemed to me that Hemp seeds and Chia seeds (the plant based foods high in omega oils, and raw, vegan protein ) stole the show.
This year “Sprouted” was a new theme in featured in many products I was sampling.
- Sprouted tofu!
- Sprouted brown rice!
You name it. They are sprouting it and putting it in a sweet package you will throw in your healthfood store basket.
You have heard of and munched on alfalfa and bean sprouts I am sure.
There is a good reason why—these are simple. You can buy them in the produce section of the store or grow them easily at home. These other things (tofu and brown rice) not so easy. But why bypass partaking in a technique yourself that is so very simple and seasonally "right on" when you can do it at home for cents?
This is the perfect time of year—buds bursting, more sunlight, time to harness that energy and get sprouting yourself!
Why?
Eating sprouted foods infuses your meals with more of that real food as medicine vitality – that Spring has sprung energy gets into your cells.
Sprouts are extremely nutritional foods:
- When they begin growing, their protein content increases.
- When they get start to get green, they are extremely rich in chlorophyll and vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients abound.
We know that seeds are nutritional superhero powerhouses – urging them to spring forward on your kitchen sill into another version of the life cycle (like humans coming out of hibernation) means you get the freshest of the fresh when you eat a newly sprouted seed.
They are packed with essential enzymes and high levels of anti-oxidants (which combat the free-radicals associated with aging and degenerative disease)
So get sprouting, spring has sprung and your meals should be inspired and infused with this vitality too!
